Well Google Plus (or Google+) launched.

Without me.

None of my “friends” fixed me up with an invite.

I am unloved and unworthy of love.

Google+ humor is breaking out everywhere, and my favorite is:

Welcome to Plus Club
#1 – The first rule of Plus Club is, you do not talk about Plus Club.
#2 – The second rule of Plus Club is, you DO NOT talk about Plus Club.
#3 – If someone +mentions you, invites you to hang out, shares a Spark with you, you +1 them.
#4 – Put people in relevant Circles.
#5 – As many Circles as you like.
#6 – No Facebookers, no Buzz commoners.
#7 – Plus threads will go on as long as they have to.
#8 – If this is your first night at Plus Club, you have to post.

<del datetime="2011-07-09T01:20:29+00:00">
Not that I’d know. I’m not “in”. C’mon interwebs, hook me up already.</del> I’m in! Thanks to my online friend Vera for fixing me up.

In 2006 I was building my LinkedIn network within specific industries and geographically in Australia. At the time I was not an “Open Networker” who accepted all invitations.

Now LinkedIn is not in itself a network – it is a tool for networkers to use. You’ll want to continue your networking efforts outside of LinkedIn.

What should you do specifically inside LI to grow your network within an industry or geographic region?

Get a gmail address for LinkedIn and add it to the bottom of your profile (in the text of your contact settings), invite connection requests from people in those industries (spell them out). Gmail will filter most of the spam that will emerge from this and you can change that email address every few months.

In the Interests part of your profile list the industries you are specifically looking for as they appear on LinkedIn

In the Summary part of your profile list the industries and geography you are inviting connections from and state that you welcome contact from people in these industries.

In the Current Job part of your profile list the industries and geography you are inviting connections from and state that you welcome contact from people in these industries.

Do a People search for the industry refine the search and sort by degrees away from you. e.g. Showing the first 500 users in your network matching your criteria.

Users in Medical Devices

Sorted by: degrees away from you

If you invite connections in this way, please do not click I Don’t Know (IDK) if you don’t want to connect with them. Just delete or archive their requests. Clicking IDK penalizes the inviter and can get their account suspended. If they are persistent inviters then IDK them or Accept and unlink that way they can’t invite you ever again.

Quick Tip: Premium members receive free inmail and they sort at the top of each page. Send an INmail introducing yourself and what you are looking for. Write your own boilerplate and do not use LinkedIn’s boilerplate text. If you’d like to connect with them, tell them and offer to send an invitation later. Otherwise offer whatever information is in your “keeping in touch” pipeline.

Read non-premium profiles in 2nd degree and beyond, looking for an email address. Those without email addresses leave your two choices:

Request an introduction via your network. People with small networks trust introductions via that network.

Google is your friend for anyone who looks really interesting. In Australia call their company and ask for them

That’s how I got started before I joined the LIONs. Funny thing is that most of the IDK’s I’ve received have been from people who know me but didn’t know my surname.

I like the idea of Twitter as a micro-blogging tool.

What is Twitter?
Twitter is for staying in touch and keeping up with friends no matter where you are or what you’re doing. For some friends you might want instant mobile updates—for others, you can just check the web. Invite your friends to Twitter and decide how connected you want you to be.
How does Twitter work?
When you send in a mobile text (SMS), Twitter sends it out to your group of friends and posts it to your Twitter page. Your friends might not have phone alerts turned on so they may check your web page instead. Likewise, you receive your friends mobile updates on your phone.

Twitter not really popular in Australia, and I’m only using it via the web, IM and Facebook, but not via SMS as my plan is not for cheap SMS. I’ve increased my SMS usage recently but not enough to become dependent on it.

I generally write considered posts in this and other blogs, so my status update is an interesting way to let people know about what I’m doing day to day without going into a lot of detail.

You can follow my twitter.

LinkedIn has caught up with every other major social/business networking site and added profile photos. This is a good thing, especially if you have an icon, brand or memorable photo. It’s been one of the frustrating omissions on LinkedIn for a while. I’m linked to a number of people who I haven’t met often if at all, having a photo helps when we meet in the Real World â„¢.

I’m not terribly happy that I am “granting to LinkedIn Corporation a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable license to use this information in the course of offering the LinkedIn service“. That’s from the LinkedIn User Agreement. It’s the irrevocable nature of the license I don’t like.

Then again I’m providing the same license for my personal information that I’m uploading in my profile. It’s the cost of having the profile highly visible.

I’m using Facebook more than LinkedIn but Facebook is a bit out there for conservative business types.

As usual I’m an open networker and happy to connect with you on any social network platform that I am already a member of.

I’m experimenting with what this blog means to me. You can’t see it, but the tag line is Technology, Travel, eBay, Airline seating, Social Networking — a life online, but I sometimes struggle to differentiate it from my other blogs, forums and online writing. This is the closest to my personal blog i.e. no topic in particular, which is generally a bad idea as people aren’t sure why they should come back.

Anyway I’ll be ruminating on those esoteric topics that engage my interest from time to time.

In the meantime I’ve finally decided to give Last.FM a chance and have installed the widget in the sidebar. Here it is below for now as well.

As I spend more time online, I find I’m very interested in digital convergence and how to share what I find interesting. Please join Last.FM and let me know what music you like. I’m heavily into the blues at the moment. But a recommendation is how I found out about Lily Allen before she was famous. So you never know.
