Dan Finnerty & the Dan Band
I saw a performance by The Dan Band on MTV last night. I was laughing so hard I had to stop workinging on the Ziggy’s Online Games website, go upstairs and grab my wife and show her.
This is one of the hottest live shows in Hollywood right now, and I can see why. The Dan Band is a all male threesome that sings diva anthems. Grrl power! It’s funny and inspired lunacy. I want to see this show live. The performance songs include “Ring My Bell” by Anita Ward, “Nasty” by Janet Jackson, “Slave 4 U” by Britney Spears and “Hold On” by Wilson Phillips.
The show was produced by Dreamworks for Bravo. There’s a CD available on amazon.
American or British Spelling
A dozen years ago I was a publisher of childrens and adult non-fiction books. That role allowed me to set editorial policy on spelling and style usage. We decided to follow the lead of the Macquarie Dictionary as the leading arbiter of Australian English.
We’d discuss and debate the correct or preferred spelling of words. Normally I’d push for rewriting the piece to avoid the problem words.
One funny point was the assumption that Americans spelled things wrongly. Specifically the belief that the omission of the penultimate u in word ending in -our. In simpler terms we’re talking about humour, humor; favour, favor; colour, color and so on.
Interestingly at the time the Macquarie dictionary was showing the American spelling as correct but not as widely used.
Rabbi Ohs
The South Sydney Rabbitohs are a team in the Australian National Rubgy League.
My 5 year-old daughter saw fans in team jerseys walking to a game over the weekend. Her cousin is a mad Rabbitohs fan. And being 5 years old she called them Rabbi-Ohs.
Now that’s funny on so many levels. Given two of her best friends are Jewish it makes sense that she would be familiar with the term “rabbi”.
I don’t claim to be an expert in modern Jewish Australian culture (for the record I’m a gentile), what sort of trouble could a team of burly rabbis get into on a pre-season bonding trip to Coffs Harbour?
Or is the team selected by the Rabbinical Council of NSW?
